Well Development Equipment: Define the Supply Scope
Quick answer
Ask for well development as an identifiable equipment and service scope alongside the rig quotation. The offer should state the proposed method, compatible tools and utilities, discharge arrangements, responsible team and agreed completion records. Drilling equipment, development work and a pumping test are separate tasks; confirm explicitly which are included.
Why development deserves its own supply line
Published 24 October 2026. This is technical procurement analysis of earlier guidance, not a new project announcement or regulation. UF/IFAS Extension’s Water Wells for Florida Irrigation Systems explains that development addresses fine material and drilling fluid near the well, and discusses several methods. The page metadata gives an online publication date of 19 October 2017 and records review approval on 15 December 2025. These metadata dates are not a new publication today. Its Florida irrigation context is not a worldwide operating specification. [1]
The UNICEF/Skat Foundation drilling toolkit is dated 2018 in its citation imprint. Module 3, page 7, lists borehole development and pumping tests as separate supervision milestones. Module 4, page 23, also separates development from the pumping test and stresses avoiding damage to the casing, screens and formation. The 2024 folder in its download address is not the publication date. [2]
Separate development from drilling and testing
RigSpan’s purchasing recommendation is to show three boundaries in the enquiry: equipment for drilling, equipment and services for development, and any subsequent testing scope. A supplier can propose a combined offer, but each task still needs an identifiable description, price basis and responsible party.
Write down whether you want equipment supply only, a contractor to perform the work, or both. A drilling compressor shown beside a rig does not establish that the development tools, hoses, connections, personnel or discharge handling are included. Likewise, the word “pump” does not identify its intended task.
Keep the pumping-test equipment schedule separate. This article addresses development procurement; it does not set a test programme or interpret the well’s sustainable yield.
Six items to request before comparing totals
This original quotation checklist requests a project-specific proposal and documented responsibilities. It does not choose a development technique or prescribe pressure, pumping rate, treatment chemicals or operating duration.
| Scope line | Information to send | Written response requested |
|---|---|---|
| Method and responsibility | Well purpose, construction record and requested service boundary | Proposed method, responsible reviewer and equipment-only/service scope |
| Tools and well interfaces | Casing/screen information, depths and known restrictions | Tool references, compatibility basis and unresolved information |
| Utilities and auxiliaries | Available air, power, water and site access | Equipment-specific requirements, connections and buyer-supplied items |
| Discharge and site arrangements | Available space and project discharge restrictions | Proposed handling scope and responsibility for approvals |
| Completion evidence | Project requirements and responsible acceptance party | Record template and agreed basis for deciding completion |
| Handover and exclusions | Testing/installation team and intended next task | Accepted records, open actions and explicit exclusions |
Match the proposed tools to the completed well
Send the responsible supplier or contractor the available well-construction record: casing and screen details where applicable, installed depths, known internal restrictions, drilling method and fluids used. Ask which missing information prevents it from proposing equipment or confirming access. Record unknowns instead of filling them with catalogue assumptions.
Require the bidder to name the proposed development method and list its tools, equipment and service requirements. Where it proposes an air-based arrangement, ask for the equipment-specific air requirement and connection schedule. Where it proposes a pumping arrangement, ask it to identify the actual pump and its suitability for the task. Do not transfer the rig’s drilling-air range to a development calculation.
UF/IFAS warns that sand during development can wear pumping equipment and advises against using the permanent pump where possible in its overpumping discussion. The procurement implication is to ask explicitly which pump will be used and who accepts its intended duty, rather than assuming that the final installation pump covers every temporary task. [1]
Agree discharge, completion evidence and handover
Ask who provides the proposed discharge route, collection or settlement arrangements, required site space and any off-site disposal service. Have the responsible project team confirm the applicable permissions and restrictions. Keep these questions visible even when the development equipment is supplied by a separate contractor.
Agree a record template before fieldwork: well identifier, date, method, equipment references, work performed, observations, any measurements required by the approved programme, interruptions and unresolved conditions. Identify who decides that development is complete and what evidence supports that decision. Visual clarity alone should not be presented as proof that water meets its intended quality requirements.
Define the handover from the development team to the testing or installation team. If further work is required, record the owner of the open action. No universal completion threshold, duration, yield improvement or water-quality guarantee is adopted here.
Connect the completion scope to your rig enquiry
The 200 m trailer, ST300 trailer and 400 m crawler configurations below are starting points for drilling-equipment enquiries. Their names and images do not confirm an included development package, a particular technique or an available field contractor. Ask for an order-specific rig and auxiliary schedule.
Use the water-well enquiry checklist and water-well equipment package for the broader scope. The compressor RFQ guide helps identify air-supply questions where relevant; it is not a development sizing calculation. Keep accepted equipment references with the equipment records and the worksheets in the download library.
RigSpan coordinates independent equipment sourcing and supplier clarification. The appointed well professional and project team must approve the method, equipment duty, site arrangements and acceptance requirements. Citing the university and toolkit does not imply a commercial relationship or approval of any catalogue configuration.
Buyer questions.
Does buying a water-well rig include borehole development equipment?
Do not assume it. Request an itemised response for the development method, tools, auxiliaries and field-service responsibilities, even if one supplier offers the complete package.
Can the permanent pump be assumed suitable for development?
No. Identify the proposed temporary task and ask the responsible supplier or contractor to confirm the pump duty. UF/IFAS flags sand-related wear during development; this article supplies no universal pump selection.

External sources support the background points attributed to them. The enquiry questions, checklists and procurement implications are RigSpan editorial guidance. References to other manufacturers do not imply a commercial relationship, endorsement or performance equivalence.
