DTH Bit Regrinding: Specify the Support Package
Quick answer
If DTH button-bit regrinding is part of your plan, request a separate support schedule: identify the actual bits, compatible workholding and grinding tools, utility requirements, consumables and instructions. A rig model or nominal bore diameter alone does not define a usable grinding package or prove that a worn bit is suitable for regrinding.
Why the grinding arrangement needs a separate brief
Published 22 October 2026. This is technical procurement analysis of earlier manufacturer documents, not news of a launch today. Sandvik’s announcement dated 10 February 2026 describes stationary, rig-mounted and handheld resharpening arrangements for top-hammer and DTH button bits. It states the RG550Be size capability using skirt/shank diameter. [1]
Epiroc’s grinding catalogue, revision 9866 0294 01c dated June 2024, distinguishes grinding machines, their supply arrangements and supporting accessories. Its RH4 table lists separate shank and head limits. These are examples of specified manufacturer systems, not a fitment or performance statement for a YQD rig. [2]
Define the bit before comparing a grinder
RigSpan’s purchasing recommendation is to prepare a bit-identification sheet alongside the drilling enquiry. Provide the manufacturer and part reference where known, the available drawing, head and shank dimensions, button geometry and photographs. Ask the responsible supplier which information it needs to confirm a proposed workholding and grinding-tool combination.
Keep each dimension named. An enquiry saying only “grinder for the rig’s hole size” can leave the bidder guessing which physical limit matters. Request a marked drawing or a written compatibility schedule for the actual bits, rather than equating the rig’s listed bore range with a grinder capacity field.
This article concerns DTH button-bit support. Do not apply it to PDC drag bits or other cutting tools with a different construction. The relevant tool manufacturer or competent service provider must determine condition, suitability for regrinding and applicable instructions.
Six lines to add to the tooling quotation
This is an original RFQ comparison aid. It does not specify grinding settings, wear limits or a universal maintenance interval.
| Scope line | Buyer information | Written response requested |
|---|---|---|
| Bits and geometry | Bit references, drawings and named dimensions | Confirmed scope and any unmatched bit types |
| Working arrangement | Workshop, mobile or separately reviewed rig-mounted requirement | Exact proposed machine/version and installation boundary |
| Workholding and grinding tools | Actual bit and button information | Matched holder/tool references with inclusion status |
| Utilities and connections | Available site supplies and equipment | Version-specific requirements and buyer-supplied items |
| Consumables and documents | Required initial support and record format | Itemised consumables, parts references and applicable instructions |
| Handover and service | Named supplier and receiving responsibilities | Demonstration/training scope, records and explicit exclusions |
Match the utilities to the exact offered arrangement
Ask the bidder to identify the proposed machine version and its complete supply requirements. Request an itemised response for the drive, connections, cooling or flushing arrangement and any site-supplied equipment. If a rig-mounted solution is proposed, require written confirmation of the mounting and service interfaces for the actual rig; do not assume it is an available attachment.
The two source documents illustrate why a generic grinder label is insufficient. Different listed arrangements use different power or supply systems. Their figures and interfaces belong to those machines. Do not copy another manufacturer’s utility values into a YQD quotation or choose a connection from a catalogue photograph.
Keep utilities visible beside the drilling air-compressor enquiry where relevant. A compressor proposal for drilling does not automatically confirm the complete support-equipment scope.
Make consumables, documentation and support traceable
Request a parts schedule showing which workholding items, grinding cups or wheels, connection items and initial consumables are included, optional or excluded. Have the supplier identify the matched parts and applicable document revision. A family-level brochure should not replace the accepted configuration list.
Agree who provides the equipment-specific instructions, demonstration, training and later consumable identification. For an external regrinding service, define the identification and return records with that provider instead of treating workshop service as included in a rig purchase. These are supply-scope questions, not a promise of authorised service or field attendance.
If a bidder claims savings or a longer bit life, ask for the conditions, bit references and evidence supporting that offer. This article adopts no universal saving, production rate, regrind count or returned-bit performance guarantee.
Connect the support plan to the DTH equipment enquiry
The YQD-115, YQD-165 and YQD-230 catalogue configurations below provide three drilling-equipment discussion routes. Their names do not confirm an included grinder, a particular button bit or compatibility with Sandvik or Epiroc equipment. Ask for the actual rig, hammer and tooling offer first, then resolve any separate support package with the responsible supplier.
Keep the mechanical connection questions in the DTH hammer and bit checklist and the overall scope in the DTH equipment package. Use the pre-shipment evidence guide to agree what an equipment demonstration covers. The maintenance records guide and download library help keep accepted references and service records together.
RigSpan coordinates equipment sourcing and supplier questions. Grinding practice, bit rejection decisions and safe use remain subject to the actual equipment and tool instructions and the responsible personnel. Buyer questions.
Can a YQD rig’s listed bore diameter select a complete grinding package?
No. Identify the actual bit, its relevant dimensions and button geometry, then request a confirmed workholding/tooling and utility schedule for the proposed grinder.
Does this article set a wear limit or explain how to regrind a bit?
No. It defines purchasing information. The tool and grinding-equipment instructions and responsible service personnel determine condition, suitability and operating requirements.
