Procurement guide / Solar Pile Drivers
Solar Pile Driver Project Brief: From Pile Drawing to RFQ
Quick answer
Send the pile drawing and approved installation requirements before asking for a machine recommendation. Include ground information, required handling and reach, tolerances, access constraints and the project’s response to refusal.
Begin with the pile and installation plan
A solar pile driver quotation needs more than the size of the solar plant. Attach the pile profile, dimensions, material specification and lengths to be handled. Identify the approved installation method and which project party is responsible for foundation design, tolerances and acceptance.
Keep installed embedment, total pile length and the required machine handling height as separate fields. Ask the supplier to review the actual drawing and state how the pile will be held and handled. A broad “piling depth” label in a catalogue should not be substituted for that review.
Give every bidder the same project brief
The schedule below is an enquiry aid. Foundation acceptance criteria must come from the project’s responsible engineer and approved specifications; a machine supplier’s brochure cannot establish them.
| RFQ field | Attach or describe | Confirmation needed |
|---|---|---|
| Pile | Profile drawing, length, material and handling needs | Holder, attachment and machine reach |
| Installation | Approved method, tolerances and embedment | Proposed configuration and limitations |
| Ground | Investigation information and known obstructions | Assumptions requiring engineering review |
| Refusal | Project escalation and approved alternatives | Separate scope for any additional equipment |
| Site | Rows, access, movement and unloading | Working and transport arrangement |
Include difficult-ground decisions in the enquiry
DNV’s 2022 commentary discusses subsurface variability, pile refusal and risks associated with poorly defined pre-drilling and quality control. It is engineering background rather than a new 2026 requirement. For an equipment enquiry, the practical question is which installation assumptions the project has actually approved.
Ask who decides when driving must stop and how an obstruction or refusal is recorded and escalated. If pre-drilling is part of the project, provide the approved method and ask for a separately identified equipment scope. Do not treat greater hammer energy or an unreviewed pre-drill option as an automatic solution to every refusal.
Ask for a configuration-specific offer
Request the proposed machine, hammer or attachment, pile holder, guide arrangement and any drilling attachment as separate line items. Ask the supplier to explain which changes are required for the pile profiles in your brief. Record excluded accessories and site-supplied equipment.
For site movement, provide row spacing, turning restrictions, slope information and the planned access route. Ask for applicable operating limits, transport dimensions and handling instructions for the offered configuration. Avoid converting a general travel or slope figure into permission to work in conditions that have not been reviewed.
Finally, agree the evidence required before shipment: identification photographs, configuration sheet, functional demonstration scope, packing list and documentation. Installation rate claims should identify the conditions and exclusions behind them. Request a project-specific explanation rather than using a headline number as a programme guarantee.

Does a larger hammer guarantee that piles will reach design depth?
No. Ground conditions and the approved foundation and installation design must be reviewed. Equipment size alone cannot resolve every refusal.
Can a supplier set the foundation acceptance criteria?
Use the project’s approved engineering specification. Ask the equipment supplier to explain how its offered configuration relates to those requirements.
