Geological Core Drilling Rig RFQ: Define the Sample First

Quick answer

Start with the investigation objective, required sample and planned hole programme. Then ask suppliers to confirm the drilling method, rod and barrel system, depth basis and complete support package for that programme.

Describe what the investigation needs to recover

A geological investigation is not fully described by a maximum depth. Explain whether the task requires rock core, soil samples or another investigation method, and provide the relevant investigation specification. Record who is responsible for approving sample requirements and the drilling method.

Comacchio maintains a dedicated diamond core drilling product line. That separation is a useful reminder to distinguish a defined coring system from a general-purpose drilling label. It is not evidence that any RigSpan catalogue configuration supports every coring method.

For an XY-1A or GK200 enquiry, request the actual offered technical sheet rather than treating the model name as a complete specification. RigSpan’s catalogue notes that supplier listings can differ. Attach the supplier’s revision to the enquiry so everyone is discussing the same proposed machine.

Set out the hole and sample programme

Complete these fields before asking for a final selection. Where investigation data is unavailable, identify the missing item and ask whether it prevents the supplier from making a firm recommendation. Do not fill an unknown ground description with an optimistic assumption.

Read capacity as a conditional statement

Ask which rod size, drilling method, inclination and ground assumptions support a quoted depth. Request the applicable rotation range, torque information, feed and pullback data, and rod-handling arrangement for the offered configuration. Keep units and conditions attached to each figure.

Ask how the proposed rods, core barrel, bits and circulation equipment fit together. If a quotation excludes the pump or tooling, request a separate schedule that identifies what must be supplied locally. An attractive rig-only price may be difficult to compare with a complete investigation package.

Discuss site access separately from downhole capability. Supply route width, unloading restrictions, available lifting equipment, working footprint and transport constraints. A portable or skid arrangement still needs a credible plan for moving, positioning and supporting the equipment.

Compare evidence before comparing final totals

Request a configuration-specific technical sheet, tooling list, operating and maintenance documentation, and an explanation of consumables and spare support. If the supplier offers a demonstration, agree which components and functions it will show. Record the limitations of a workshop demonstration compared with your ground and sampling objectives.

Return unclear claims as written questions. For example: “Which barrel and rod system is included?” is more actionable than “Is the machine suitable for geology?” Keep the accepted answers with the quotation and project brief so a later change in sample requirements triggers a documented review.

Buyer questions.

Does the same model name always mean the same specification?

No. Confirm the offered technical sheet, power unit, tooling system and included equipment; supplier listings can describe different configurations.

Should I request a rig-only or complete-package quotation?

Ask for itemised scope in either case. Identify rods, barrels, bits, circulation equipment and support items so that exclusions remain visible.
